Civil Rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton recently unveiled the preliminary schedule for the National Action Network Annual Convention, taking place at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel from April 18-22.
The Convention, the largest of its kind in the country, will welcome civil rights leaders and allies from around the country as the civil rights community refocuses its efforts to resisting a hostile presidential administration in the upcoming midterm elections.
The NAN convention will bring together influential national leaders from the civil rights movement, government, labor, religion, business, media, the Black church and the activist community – to reflect on King’s legacy and impact while celebrating today’s civil rights leaders and examining the path forward.
Headlining the NAN convention is the annual “Keepers of the Dream Awards” on April 18, 2018 at 6:00 pm, where Rev. Sharpton and NAN celebrate those who have continued to advocate for the principles that Dr. King gave his life for.
This year’s list of honorees features leading names in entertainment, civil rights and business, including Common, the first rapper to win an Emmy, Grammy and Oscar Award, MSNBC Host Joy-Ann Reid, Rev. A.R. Bernard, Founder of the Christian Cultural Center, Richelieu Dennis, owner of Essence and Founder & CEO OF Sundial Brands, Human Rights Activist and Author Kerry Kennedy and Robert F. Smith, Founder, Chairman & CEO of Vista Equity Partners.
Some of the Speakers who attended and spoke on many of the panels: Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with Rev. Al Sharpton, NAN Chairman Rev. Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio New York City Public Advocate Letitia James, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.
One of the panels was headed by Rev Al Sharpton’s Daughter, Moderator: Dominique Sharpton-Bright, National Director of Membership, National Action Network.
