A curated showcase of African designers is set to rule the runway during New York Fashion Week next month as part of the EMERGE! A Fashion Runway Show. Now in its seventh year, Emerge! has teamed with Wearable Art Collective to curate the special presentation featuring both men’s and women’s wear, traditional African designs, jewelry, and hand-crafted shoes.
Founded by D. Williams Public Relations Group, Emerge! has become one of the top platforms for emerging designers to showcase their work during New York Fashion Week to a room full of retail buyers, fashion influencers, celebrities, top fashion editors and tastemakers. Hundreds of designer submissions are reviewed by an elite designer committee, which selects some of the top designers from around the world.
he Wearable Art Collective’s mission is to promote, strengthen, empower African designers & artisans. It strives to serve as good global citizens and provide a foundation to empower African designers.
This year’s featured designers include VanVorsh, Clarence Clottey, Orla Couture, Senyo Foli, Ohene Couture, Yetroselane Couture, Nyonuvi, Royal Dennis, Jesu Segun, Muggs Jewellery, Redeemer Jewellry, Lumiere, and Catou Designs.
In addition, Emerge! will present the Fashion Innovator Award to New York Fashion Week creator, Fern Mallis, in recognition of her worldwide influence and innovation in fashion. Past honorees have included Andre’ Leon Talley, Vogue contributing editor; Constance C.R. White, former ESSENCE Editor-in-Chief; Mikki Taylor, fashion icon; and legendary model Patricia Cleveland.
The fashion show will feature a red carpet and reception at 6pm with the presentation beginning at 7pm.
Fern Mallis, the Godmother of Fashion was honored with the The Fashion Innovator Award, Hailed as the award winning creator of New York Fashion Week, fern Mallis has been called an industry titan, fashion powerhouse, and the Godmother of fashion.
Widely credited with transforming New York Fashion Week into one of the big four fashion events on the international circuit, native New Yorker Fern Mallis is a celebrated fashion consultant. For ten years, from 1991-2001, she was executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), the country’s governing body of fashion designers and runway shows.In 1993,she started the initiative to organize a modern and centralized platform for American fashion designers to display their clothing and called the event “Seventh on Sixth”.
A noted philanthropist, Mallis has spearheaded charity events and initiatives that have raised millions of dollars for organizations like Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids (DIFFA) and the CFDA’S Fashion Targets Breast Cancer , which has raised more than $55 million to date.
