Dance/NYC’s 2017 Symposium   used as its organizing device cultural planning underway by the City of New York and deep dive into the topics of growing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workforce, increasing dance education, addressing the challenge of affordability, and driving interagency cooperation, among others. How can New Yorkers, by working together and across sectors, act now to advance the art form and more than 1,200+ dance makers and companies in the metropolitan area? And how can the art form contribute to the future of all New Yorkers?

As the only full-day gathering of the dance community in the New York metropolitan area, the Symposium aimed  to share information and innovation and to stimulate awareness, interest, and ongoing engagement in dance. The Symposium made use of multiple studios for panel discussions, case studies, interactive workshops, a networking lunch, and more.

Leadership support is provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Howard Gilman Foundation. The Symposium is also supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council, from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Moving Policy and Practice… Dance/NYC’s mission is to promote the knowledge, appreciation, practice, and performance of dance in the metropolitan New York City area. It embeds values of equity and inclusion into all aspects of the organization.  It works in alliance with Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance.

Dance/NYC is committed to effective case building grounded in research. It is the only entity with a substantive history of research on NYC Dance — from the Economic Impact of Dance in New York City to recent State of NYC Dance reports based on New York State Cultural Data project data — and the only one with the authority to speak on behalf of the entire field. Through research, Dance/NYC guides strategic policy and fund development and improves management practice.
