9/11 FIRST RESPONDER LUIS ALVAREZ AT THE 19TH ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE BREAKFAST.
A presentation will be made to the family of NYPD Detective Luis Alvarez The First Responders Children’s Foundation Public Service Hero Award will be presented to FDNY Lieutenant Sarinya Srisakul, the first Asian female firefighter in the FDNY.

Over 1,500 guests are expected to attend the 19th annual Breakfast that began in the wake of 9/11 to provide a welcoming holiday community for first responder families who endured tragedy.
The Luis G. Alvarez scholarship will be announced and presented to Detective Alvarez’s widow Alaine Parker Alvarez.

Alvarez, who passed away from 9/11-related illnesses, is known for his advocacy on behalf of 9/11 first responders and his lobbying efforts including pleading before the United States Congress to replenish the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.

The Foundation will recognize NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill for his support of First Responders Children’s Foundation throughout his years in public service.
The breakfast is expected to mark one of O’Neill’s last official public appearances as NYPD Commissioner prior to his stepping down on November 30, 2019.

About First Responders Children’s Foundation: First Responders Children’s Foundation provides financial support to both children who have lost a parent in the line of duty as well as families enduring significant financial hardships due to tragic circumstances.

First Responders Children’s Foundation also supports, promotes, and facilitates educational activities and programs created and operated by law enforcement and firefighting organizations whose purpose is to benefit children or the community at large.
Each year, an average of 200 first responders die in the line of duty, and thousands more become permanently disabled, rendering them unable to provide for their families.

Since 2006, First Responders Children’s Foundation has spent $3 Million to help ensure that the children of first responders receive the resources necessary to help them thrive and become the heroes of tomorrow.

The Foundation has awarded more than $787,000 through 320 college scholarships and emergency grants to first responder families and departments across 37 states.

First Responders Children’s Foundation was formed in 2002 as the National Law Enforcement & Firefighter Children’s Foundation. Founder Alfred R. Kahn hosted the first signature event, the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Breakfast, in November, 2001 shortly after the 9/11 tragedy.

His hope was to provide the families of New York’s first responders lost in the line of duty with a positive, supportive, and festive atmosphere as they entered what was certain to be a very difficult holiday season.
