Keynote address by General Colin Powell at NRF -2016

Colin Luther Powel is an American statesman and a retired four-star general in the United States Army.He was the 65th United States Secretary of State, serving under U.S. President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005, the first African American to serve in that position. During his military career, Powell also served as National Security Advisor (1987–1989), as Commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command (1989) and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989–1993), holding the latter position during the Persian Gulf War. Born in Harlem as the son of Jamaican immigrants, Powell was the first, and so far the only, African American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the first of two consecutive black office-holders to serve as U.S. Secretary of State.

Clinton Global Initiative 2015 Meeting-NYC

President Bill Clinton and Clinton Foundation Vice Chair Chelsea Clinton will host the 11th Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting on September 26-29 in New York City. More than 1,000 of the most influential leaders from philanthropy, business, government, and civil society will assemble at this year’s meeting, themed “The Future of Impact,” to define the next decade of solving global challenges and highlight the necessary next steps for accelerating progress going forward. Announced today are initial participants and attendees as well as session highlights.

Coinciding with the United Nations’ new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), members of the CGI community will explore how to take action on timely issues such as climate change, women’s equality, and global health at this pivotal time in philanthropy and international development.

President Clinton established the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), an initiative of the Clinton Foundation, to convene global leaders to create and implement innovative solutions through the creation of Commitments to Action – new, specific, measurable plans to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges. To date, members of the CGI community have made more than 3,200 Commitments to Action which have improved the lives of over 430 million people in more than 180 countries.

• Escalators of Opportunity in which leaders from the private, public, and civil sectors will discuss how income inequality and social mobility starts by investing in children—placing them on the escalator to more equitable futures—and is continued by empowering individuals to create wealth and break cycles of inequality;
• Looking to the Next Frontier where industry-leaders will demonstrate how innovations of today can impact our societies, environment, and economies of tomorrow;
• Climate Change and Resiliency: Redefining Business as Usual in which participants will discuss how investing in prevention and preparedness can mitigate the negative effects of natural disasters and climate change;
• Unleashing Women’s Economic Opportunities which will include a No Ceilings Conversation to examine priorities to advance the status of women and girls over the next 20 years, and a panel on women as sustainability leaders in which panelists will discuss how to ensure that women farmers and fishers have access to the same resources as men and are connected to global supply chains to sustainably meet future food demand and raise family incomes;
• The Future of Equality and Opportunity in which global leaders will join CGI members and youth around the world in a special closing conversation on co-creating a future rooted in justice, human rights, equality, and opportunity for all.

National Puerto Rican Day Parade Gala and Banquet-2015

The National Puerto Rican Day Parade (NPRDP) takes place annually along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, on the second Sunday in June, in honor of the nearly 4 million inhabitants of Puerto Rico and over 4 million people of Puerto Rican birth or heritage residing in the United States.

Originally, the Desfile Puertorriqueño, Inc., was born of the imperative necessity of translating Puerto Rican achievements into a visible demonstration of the strength of the Puerto Rican community, in order to organize and support our Latino counterparts. The first parade was held on Sunday, April 13, 1958, in Spanish Harlem “El Barrio”; subsequently, the organization found its new home along Fifth Avenue in New York City.

In 1995, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) organization, was formed from its predecessor, the New York Puerto Rican Parade, when Dr. Ramón S. Vélez and the parade board envisioned a national concept for demonstrating the cultural pride of our community. This new organizational structure not only broadened the scale of the parade itself but enhanced its ability to promote cultural awareness, education, leadership and community engagement among Puerto Ricans.

Annually, the NPRDP hosts many social, cultural, and educational events throughout the city including an Educational Scholarship Banquet, Cultural Festival, Parade Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Cultural Pageant (Search for Miss Puerto Rico), and the Gala Affair.

In 2007, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary with more than 100,000 marching participants and nearly three million spectators along the parade route. The parade continues to attract prominent leaders in the Puerto Rican community including celebrities like Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, El Gran Combo, Geraldo Rivera, Rosie Perez and many more.

The parade marches along Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 79th Street and has grown to become the largest demonstration of ethnic pride in the nation. The parade is a cultural icon and a part of the cultural fabric of New York City.

Each inductee received a custom-designed belt signifying his induction into the NYSBHOF. All NYSBHOF plaques are on display at the New York State Athletic Commission.

All boxers had to have been inactive for at least three years, in order to be eligible for NYSBHOF induction, and all inductees must have resided in New York State for a significant portion of their boxing careers.

THE NATIONAL BASKETBALL RETIRED PLAYERS ASSOCIATION

Founded in 1992 by NBA Legends Dave DeBusschere, Dave Bing, Archie Clark, Dave Cowens and Oscar Robertson, the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) is a non-profit association comprised of former professional basketball players of the NBA, ABA, Harlem Globetrotters, and WNBA. We are the only alumni association of its kind supported directly by the NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).

MISSION STATEMENT

The National Basketball Retired Players Association is a charitable 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a two-pronged mission to assist former NBA, ABA, Harlem Globetrotters and WNBA players in their transition from the playing court into life after the game, while also positively impacting communities and youth through basketball.

ABOUT THE NBRPA

With energetic corporate leadership and a unified Board, the future has never been brighter at the NBRPA. Now more than 20 years old, the Association provides a host of programs, services and benefits designed to help retired basketball players and their families successfully navigate life after the game. In support of its membership, the NBRPA proactively offers a full menu of education, health, finance and career/life transition benefits to retired basketball players and their families.

Working in conjunction with the NBA and NBPA, the NBRPA’s membership promotes basketball and enhances the sport’s image by building community relationships and fostering support for charitable activities and philanthropic events with a connection to the game.

By playing in the NBA, ABA, WNBA or with the Harlem Globetrotters, NBRPA members helped build the game of basketball and – through the distinction of an on-court professional career at the sport’s highest levels – remain ambassadors to the game for life. NBRPA members embody the game long after taking the court professionally and put their notoriety to positive use as spokespersons and conduits of good will in the basketball community.

Chef Marcus Samuelsson, Winner of Bravo’s Top Chef Master Season Two – 2011

Marcus Samuelsson is an Ethiopian-born, Swedish-raised chef and owner of Red Rooster Harlem in New York City and three other restaurants.

As of 2010, he lives in Harlem, near the site of his newest restaurant, Red Rooster, which opened in December 2010.

In March 2011, the Red Rooster hosted a fund-raising dinner for the Democratic National Committee. President Obama attended the dinner. The $30,800-per-plate event raised $1.5 million.

After appearing consistently as a culinary judge on the Food Network show Chopped Samuelsson competed in and won Chopped All Stars: Judges Remix. He was awarded the grand prize of $50,000 for his charity, the Careers Through Culinary Arts Program.

In 2013, Samuelsson won the James Beard Foundation award for Writing and Literature related to food. The book, Yes, Chef: A Memoir, chronicles his journey, from his grandmother’s kitchen to his arrival in New York City, and the earning of a New York Times three-star rating at the age of twenty-four.

National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS 25th Annual Gala – New York, 2012

The National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS (NBLCA), founded in November 1987, is the oldest and largest not-for-profit organization of its kind in the United States.

Their mission is to educate, organize, and empower Black leaders, including clergy, elected officials, medical practitioners, business professionals, social policy experts, and the media, to meet the challenge of fighting HIV/AIDS and other health disparities in their local communities.
The NBLCA conducts policy, research and advocacy on HIV/AIDS and other health disparities to ensure effective participation of our leadership in all policy and resource allocation decisions impacting communities of African descent nationwide.
Calvin O. Butts III (born 1949), is the Pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in the City of New York, President of the State University of New York College at Old Westbury, and Chairman and founder of the Abyssinian Development Corporation – an engine for $500 million in housing and commercial development in Harlem.

He is also Chairman of the Board for the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS. They hosted their 25th Annual “Choose Life Awards Hall of Hope and Remembrance” benefit reception on June 7th, 2012. World Liberty TV interviewed Calvin Butts about the causes and ethics of his great organization, and what he believes will help the world better tackle the issues of HIV/AIDS.

Women In The Black New York Inc. is a Harlem based entrepreneurial organization created for the purpose of educating, training and supporting women business owners.
Women In The Black is committed to educating and equipping women with the skills and resources necessary to start, build, lead and grow successful small businesses in their communities, primarily in the New York metropolitan area.
The World Liberty TV team was on hand to Women In The Black New York Inc.’s 17th Annual Men Cooking for Change Gala where we had a chat with the president of the organization, Ms. Princess Jenkins as well as meeting the honoree’s vendors exhibiting many variety of foods, beverages, and desserts.

BCA 9th Annual Global Food & Wine Experience Gala – 2012

This holiday season, BCA celebrated diversity at its 9th annual Global Food and Wine Experience which took place at Guastavino’s, located at 409 East 59th Street (underneath the 59th Street Bridge) in New York City This premier BCA Global culinary event recognized Harlem as one of NYC’s top food Mecca. During this event, over 50 chefs, wine and spirit merchants, and hundreds of food connoisseurs come together to create a platform for extraordinary culinary exploration.
As part of the event’s unique experience, more than 50 culinary students worked side by side with New York’s premier industry professionals as they prepared and unveiled the latest trends. The event highlighted a culinary sampling from select restaurants paired with gourmet tastings from winemakers, distributors and outlets from around the world.
Helen C. Shelton, Senior Partner at global public relations firm Finn Partners, was presented with the 2012 BCA Vision in Wine & Spirits Award.
