Adrian Alicea’s 2015 Fall/Winter Collection “Sueno de Satyricon”

THE TEMERITY OF ADRIAN ALICEA IS ONLY SURPASSED BY THE PRECISE EXECUTION OF HIS VISION. ADRIAN ALICEA IS THE NEW ROMANTIC OF ROMANTIC EXCESSES. CREATING A PIRATE-LIKE FAIRY-TALE OF DISGUISES. HE WALKS A TIGHTROPE BETWEEN IRONIC HEDONISTIC INCLINATIONS AND HIGHLY SERIOUS SOCIAL COMMENTARY. THERE IS OSTENTATION, AND OPULENCE. THERE IS AN INSANE CARCINOGENIC, MERCILESS NARCISSISM. THERE IS A DEAFENING, ENDLESS SHOUT OF: GIMME MORE!

Never one to shy away from opportunity. As a model ADRIAN walked the runways for the likes of THIERRY MUGLER, GIORGIO ARMANI, JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER, GIANFRANCO FERRE and PATRICIA FIELDS. In the late nineties ADRIAN met NICO URQUIZA. This meeting would eventually lead to the famed House of NICO & ADRIAN NY. For ten years, Adrian worked with Nico to create a collection that featured unique and outrageous designs. Together they presented runway shows that were so scandalous in their overt sexiness that many of the worlds top models and fashion photographers came calling for collaborations. Their designs would come to be photographed by Steven Meisel and David LaChappelle. Linda Evangelista graced the cover of ITALIAN VOGUE in their spiked wrestler helmet.

For the past two years, Adrian has been keenly focused on the evolution and continued growth of “Adrian Alicea Haute Couture”. Celebrating his growth as an artist and paying tribute to his Latino and Taino Indian roots. Adrian quietly states: “I love color. I love music. I love dance. I want my designs to bring people joy. I make everything by hand. Each piece is unique. I put everything into my work–my heart, my soul, my love. I want everyone who wears my designs to feel special, to feel proud, to know that they are different and that they have the right to be.”

Tony DeMarco former World Welterweight Boxing Champion-2014

Tony DeMarco is an American former boxer and World Welterweight Champion. Born to Sicilian immigrants, Vincent and Giacomina, DeMarco grew up in the North End neighborhood of Boston.

Due to the minimum age of eighteen, in order to box professionally, Liotta used the birth certificate of Tony DeMarco so that he could compete. DeMarco had his first professional fight when he was sixteen years old. On October 21, 1948, he knocked out Mestor Jones in one round.

DeMarco fought the top fighters in his division during the 1950s and defeated top contenders and champions like Paddy DeMarco, Teddy “Red Top” Davis, Chico Vejar and Don Jordan. The highlight of his career came on April 1, 1955, when he scored a technical knock out (TKO) over Johnny Saxton in the 14th round of their title bout to capture the world’s welterweight title.

Despite winning many bouts to become champion, he is best remembered for his two championship matches with hall of famer Carmen Basilio in 1955. Both fights were toe to toe slugfests with several ebbs and flows that kept the fans at the edges of their seats. Both fights ended in the 12th round with DeMarco suffering a TKO. In their first bout, DeMarco was the defending champion. He risked his title by taking on Basilio, who was the top ranked contender.

Although Basilio prevailed, the fight was so exciting that the pair were rematched. The second fight was almost a carbon copy of the first with Basilio wearing down DeMarco, but not before a wicked DeMarco left hook had Basilio out on his feet. DeMarco was unable to capitalize on this advantage and lost the match on a 12 round TKO.

DeMarco’s legacy is an undying part of Boston’s history. Training under Boston greats such as Frankie Waters, DeMarco was able to sell out the Boston Garden, breaking attendance records. Mayor Thomas Menino even honored DeMarco with a street, named after him, in Boston’s famous North End. The street, which is perpendicular to Atlantic Ave, is named “Tony DeMarco Way”.

DeMarco has received many honors, including an induction in the Official National Italian American Hall of Fame in Chicago. Looking back on his career, DeMarco remarked “Mainly I consider myself a slugger.” DeMarco once fought on the undercard to Rocky Marciano. In his last bout, DeMarco won a ten round decision over Stefan Redl in Boston on February 6, 1962.

A statue of Tony unveiled on October 20th at the corners of Hanover and Cross Streets in Boston’s historic North End was designed by famed sculptor Harry Weber, and a full length documentary by filmmaker Marino Amoruso based on Tony’s autobiography Nardo: Memoirs of a Boxing Champion is out and for sale.

Interview With Actor Armand Assante – 2010

Assante was born in New York City and raised in Cornwall, New York, the son of Katherine, a music teacher and poet, and Armand Anthony Assante, Sr., a painter and artist. His father was Italian American and his mother was Irish American, and he was raised in a devoutly Roman Catholic family.

During the 1970s, Assante was a regular on two NBC soap operas, How to Survive a Marriage as Johnny McGee and The Doctors as Dr. Mike Powers. His first film was The Lords of Flatbush (1974). A role that brought him greater attention came in 1980’s Private Benjamin as a handsome Frenchman who becomes the love interest of a U.S. soldier played by Goldie Hawn.

Assante’s somewhat sinister look has made him a popular choice for tough-guy heroes, as in his starring role as private eye Mike Hammer in the film I, the Jury (1982) or as Mafia gangsters like that of Michael Moretti in Sidney Sheldon’s Rage of Angels. He portrayed the notorious Bugsy Siegel in a comedy, Neil Simon’s The Marrying Man (1991), another mobster in Hoffa (1992) starring Jack Nicholson, and crime kingpin John Gotti in the 1996 made-for-television biopic Gotti, for which he won his Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie.

Howard Schultz, Chairman President and CEO, of Starbucks Speech at the 102nd NRF Conference – 2013

It all started with a cup of coffee.

Howard Schultz, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Starbucks Coffee Company, first walked into Starbucks in Seattle’s Pike Place Market in 1981. Howard was drawn into conversation with these connoisseurs who took great care in not only finding and roasting the highest quality coffee, but also sharing their passion with others. Drawn to Seattle and its extraordinary coffee culture, Howard moved from his native New York and joined Starbucks in 1982 as director of operations and marketing when Starbucks had four stores.

In 1983, Howard traveled to Italy and was captivated by Italian coffee bars and the romance of the coffee experience. He had a vision to bring the Italian coffeehouse tradition back to Seattle, creating a third place between work and home. In order to pursue this dream, Howard left Starbucks to start his own coffee company called Il Giornale and returned in August 1987 to purchase Starbucks with the help of local investors. Howard went on to create two landmark programs for Starbucks partners (employees): comprehensive health coverage for part-time partners and equity in the company in the form of stock options.

From that foundation, Starbucks has grown to more than 16,000 stores in neighborhoods around the world. What remains the same from that first cup of coffee: a connection, a conversation, and a sense of community.

Interview with Steven Scholl, President White Cloud Press – 2011

For far too long, the story of American Muslims has been told by others; rarely do American Muslim men emerge as protagonists of their own narratives, representing their religion or depicted in a way other than as violent extremists, misogynists, and irrational, angry, bearded brown men.
Although the United States strives to be a place where its citizens are encouraged to coexist and thrive, the practice of scapegoating often prevails, creating unnecessary economic, social and cultural divides. African Americans, Native Americans, Irish, Jews, Italians, and Japanese have all experienced challenges to their American experience. American Muslims are not exempt, often targets of fear-based attacks, while the media and the entertainment industry all too often serve up negative images of Islam’s followers.
Recent examples of events that have contributed to this negative narrative include:
• The New York Police Department is caught spying on Muslims based on religious activities and without any evidence of wrong-doing.
• 47% of Americans recently polled said the values of Islam are at odds with American values.
• In 2011, 49 bills were introduced in 29 states to ban Shariah law.
• 41% of Americans would be uncomfortable if a teacher at the elementary school in their community were Muslim.
Co-edited by playwright, humorist, and lawyer Wajahat Ali, All-American: 45 American Men on Being Muslim (June 2012), White Cloud Press, ISBN: 978-1-935952-59-6, $16.95) highlights voices of an emerging and impactful generation of American men that seek to debunk and re-orient existing narratives of their faith and their community.
